Secretary General of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) | International Standardization | Global Halal Quality Infrastructure

Mr. İhsan ÖVÜT is the Secretary General of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), a position he has held since December 2014. He was re-elected for the 2025–2027 term, and through his work he has made a significant contribution to the development of international standardization, the strengthening of the global halal quality infrastructure, and the improvement of cooperation among the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

He graduated in International Relations from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University in 1989, and in 1991 he began his professional career at the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE). Over many years of work, he has held a number of managerial positions, taking part in the development of international standardization, bilateral cooperation, and international relations.

As Secretary General of SMIIC, he has made a significant contribution to the institutional development of the organization, the improvement of OIC/SMIIC standards, the strengthening of the work of technical committees, and the establishment of the OIC Global Halal Quality Infrastructure. He also actively represents SMIIC at the international level and encourages the development of strategic partnerships and international cooperation agreements.

For his contribution to the development of the global halal industry, he received the Halal Malaysia Global Ambassador Award, a recognition presented to him by the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 18 September 2024.

With his many years of international experience and activity, he continues to contribute to the harmonization of halal standards, the strengthening of international cooperation, and the promotion of trust, quality, and transparency in the global halal market.
